Missionary monasteries in Vilnius

There is no place in Vilnius Old Town from which you would not see at least one church. Their entire quarters and towers form the distinctive face of Vilnius. During this walk, let’s meet the monasteries that carried out charitable and missionary activities during centuries.

300 years ago the hill surrounding Uzupis was called the Hill of the Savior. Missionary gardens with ponds, apiaries and herbal beds were located here. The missionaries took care of the education of the children of the poor, and their Sisters of Charity founded the first hospital for the poor Vilnius residents.

The Visitation Sisters had an equally impressive monastery and the Church of the Heart of Jesus. The prison, built during the Soviet era under the vault of this church, was probably the most luxurious in the Soviet Union.

Today we do not have brother missionaries, Visitation Sisters and Sisters of Charity on the Savior's Hill. However, we invite you to get to know the heritage of these monasteries (without entrance) and visit the currently operating Monastery of the Sisters of the Merciful Jesus. The world-famous image of Devine Mercy was painted in the modest chapel of the monastery now in operation. There is a hospice in the building next door, where the nurses take care of the dying and give comfort to their loved ones.

The last stop of the tour is the Ramintoja Church near the former Augustinian monastery on Savičiaus Street.

Duration: 1.15 hrs.
